Trevor Howe (B.A.Ad.Dip.Mus.Grad.Dip.Ed.) holds a post-graduate degree  in Educational Psychology, and has taught R-12 music in Australia, Europe and Asia - most recently ‘Music in English’ for Earlybird’s ‘Natuurlijk Engels op de Basisschool’ program (Rotterdam). Trevor worked closely with Virtuosi founder & director Tom Penn-Davies (AUS) from the school’s inception in 2005. Tom has previously recognised Trevor’s dedication, and generously provides the logistics in support of Virtuosi NL:

Trevor Howe - Director

Lisa has worked in Australia and Europe as an administrator in education, hospitality and entertainment. She also works for ‘2samen’, organising and coordinating after-hours and summer activities for children from 4 - 15 years of age. She has previously worked for the Aids Trust (Sydney), Today’s Art Festival (Den Haag), Newport Jazz Festival and Bevrijdingsfestival. Virtuosi welcomes her invaluable support as a native ‘Haagsenese’ speaker. She was selected on the basis of meeting precisely the requirements of the Virtuosi leadership team, and has provided administrative support and systems for Dutch taxation and payroll, as well as record keeping for students from the outset of our operations in Holland.

Ilya Ziblat- Shay was born in 1975, Haifa, Israel. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in composition and teaching from the Rubin academy in Tel Aviv, and is currently pursuing his Masters degree in composition at Koninklijk Conservatorium, The Hague. Ilya has previously taught both music theory and music literature for the Neve-Eliezer Conservatory (Tel Aviv), as well as double bass and bass guitar for the Akko Conservatory, in addition to serving as an educational mentor to the Ahuzat Yeladim school in Haifa, Israel. Also a choral conductor, Ilya composes classical, acoustic and electronic music, adhering as closely as possible to the spirit of sponteneous, heart-felt, improvisational music as possible. Gergo was born in Hungary in 1975, and is a Graduate of Franz Liszt Music Academy on Bassoon, Chamber Music and Music Education, having taken special classes and master classes on the recorder throughout his studies. He held the post of Principal Bassoon with St. Stephen Symphonic Orchestra, Budapest, for a number of years has been co-founder and Artistic Leader of Ensemble Dolce e Furioso and. Besides his wide-scale chamber music activities on both the recorder and bassoon, he has been performing extensively with various other Symphonic and Baroque orchestras all over Europe, including Donhanyi Orchestra, Animato, Capella Savaria, Savaria Baroque, Orfeo Orchestra and Concerto d’Amsterdam. Gergo held a recorder teacher’s position for four years in Kodaly Music School, Budapest. He also participated in implementing ‘The Glory of Knight,’ – a series of thematic musical and other artistic activities for primary school students, – and has twice been guest teacher for the Louis August Jonas Foundation in New York. He now studies Historical Bassoon at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, and among other activities he has been a founding member of the institution’s Historical Wind Octet and Wind Quintet. Gergo speaks Hungarian, English, German and French, and we are proud to invite him to lead our recorder department at Virtuosi.

Graham Flett studied composition in the Netherlands (M.M. Royal Conservatory of the Hague) and in Canada at Toronto's York University (B.F.A. in music). His compositions have been performed by world-class ensembles in Europe and in North America and is currently active composing new pieces for upcoming performances. Aside from being a composer Mr.Flett is also a proficient guitarist and a knowledgeable piano player, and has had numerous years teaching experience these instruments to students of all ages and levels. Inez Popko - Flute / Piano

Dorota was born in St. Petersburg but was raised in Cracow, where she started her musical education at the School for Young Talent on Piano. She holds undergraduate degrees on both oboe and piano. Dorota graduated from the Cracow Academy of Music with her Master’s degree in modern oboe and teaching in 2004 and from Royal Conservatiore in The Hague with Bachelor degree in historical oboes in 2009, under guidance of Frank de Bruine. She was awarded the S. Cohen prize in 2006, and has undertaken masterclasses with Alfredo Bernardini, Michael Niesemann, Elizabeth Wallfish, Jaap ter Linden, Peter van Heyghen, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Laurence Cummings. She is founding member of "the OBOE ensemble" and plays regularly with "The Bach Orchestra of Netherlands" and baroque orchestra "Nova Silesia". She specialises in preparing piano and oboe students for the ABRSM Exams, as well as group theory lessons for all students.

Dorota Gorlow - Piano / Oboe / Music Theory

Inez’s studies began when she was seven on the violin, moving to flute and piano at age eleven. She was principal flutist of the International Youth Symphonic Orchestra and in 2004 won 1st Prize in the IX National Competition for Young Instrumentalists. Currently, she is studying flute in the class of Thies Roorda (Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Hilversum) at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She has worked under Emily Beynon (Concertgebouw Orkest), Kersten McCall (CO), Rien de Reede (CO) and has participated in international masterclasses given by Patricia Morris (piccolo), Trevor Wye, William Bennett, and Wil Offermans (extended techniques). She has performed in Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, France and Holland as a chamber musician and soloist, most recently as a duo with guitarist Sanja Plohl for the Zeehelden Festival in The Hague.

Sarah began harp lessons at the age of seven in her home town, Paris, France. She studied harp at the National Regional Music Conservatory of Boulogne-Billancourt with Mr Daniel Douay (Principal Harpist with Paris Bastille Orchestra) and Pascale Schmitt, also taking private lessons with Professor Skaila Kanga from the Royal Academy of London. She obtained her Diploma of Higher Education in Music under Eira Lynn Jones at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (UK). She is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Music with a minor in pedagogy at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague (Netherlands) with Ernestine Stoop. Sarah has performed in France, UK, USA, South Africa, Switzerland and Spain.

Robert de Bree - Recorder / Oboe

Robert de Bree was born in Apeldoorn in 1985. During his early years he was taught by Marjoke van Die and Marjolijn van Roon. After this he finished the preparatory training of the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Paul Leenhouts and Walter van Hauwe. He now studies recorder at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague with Dorothea Winter and oboe with Frank de Bruine. Robert has followed master classes with a.o. Alfredo Bernardini, Simon Standage, Daniel Brüggen and Marijke Miessen.

He won first prize (and the prize for best execution of a contemporary work) at the international recorder competition in Utrecht (SONBU 2004) and was also a multiple prize winner at the Prinses Christina Concours(2005).

Robert has performed for the Nationale Reisopera, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ and de Doelen in Rotterdam and is one of the founding members of Scroll Ensemble. His interests are teaching, literature and arts on the stage.

Emma Elkinson - Flute / Recorder / Whistle

Emma Elkinson (B.Mus.Perf.L.R.S.M.) has studied in Canada, London and her native Ireland before coming to the Royal Conservatory of The Hague to undertake Masters with Barthold Kuijken, Robert Aitken, Patrick Gallois and Alison Melville. She has recorded for Naxos with the Aradia Ensemble and Toronto Chamber Orchestra, the soundtrack for the award-winning film In America as well for composers Carol Anne Weaver and John Buckley. Emma has appeared variously as soloist and principal flautist for the Classical Music Consort, Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Dublin Concert Band, Irish Youth Wind Orchestra, Irish National Youth Orchestra and Dublin Symphony Orchestra - and has even performed in Italy for the Pope! Emma has extensive teaching experience in extended techniques, historical performance, flute, recorder and theory in both schools and tertiary settings, in addition to her private studio students.

Stephen Caruana - Drums

Stephen Caruana has been teaching drums since 1998. In those 11 years Stephen has completed two Conservatory studies. The first in Australia, studying Jazz Drums, the Second in Holland, studying Latin Percussion. Prior to those study years, Stephen grew up listening to and playing Rock, Pop and Metal. Stephen enjoys sharing his knowledge of music to students of all levels and ages and has an approach to teaching and learning that is enthusiastic and customised for each student. During the lessons, students learn to read music, rudiments, play grooves and most importantly, learn to play songs. All lessons are conducted in English…(with a sprinkle of the Australian accent to make it more unique).

Virginia Quiles was born in 1982. She obtained her Diploma in Clarinet

Teaching from the Valencia Conservatory of Music. She later graduated

in Clarinet Interpretation at the High Conservatory of Music, simultaneously receiving a Degree in Audiovisual Communication from the University of Valencia in addition to her Pedagogic Competence Certificate. Virginia has followed master classes with Alan Damiens, Charles Neidich, Jose Luis Estelles, Joan Enric Lluna (soloist, Orchestra of the Palau de les Arts “Reina Sofia” of Valencia), Enrique Pérez (soloist of the Spanish National Orchestra) and J.V. Herrera (soloist, Orchestra of Valencia). She currently studies at the Conservatory of Rotterdam under the guidance of Nancy Braithwaite. She performs regularly with various Orchestra’s and Chamber groups, and has six years teaching experience. She previously worked as a clarinet teacher for the School of Music of the Music Society “La Popular” of Pedralba, and in the School of Music “Taller de Música Jove” in Valencia.

Leonardo Miucci - Piano

Leonardo Miucci was born in Milan in 1982. He took his initial ten year diploma in pianoforte at the Music Conservatory “E. Duni” in Matera under Costantino Mastroprimiano (2001) ; Diploma of Chamber Music at the Music Conseratory “F. Morlacchi”  (Perugia, 2003) and obtained his Master Degree in Chamber Music in 2006. Notable concert performances in Italy and in Europe include the Ghione Theatre in Rome, by invitation having won the piano competition “Heinrich Neuhaus – Enfant Prodige” in 1995, and the Wienersaal, Salzburg 2005. In 2009 he took a further Bachelor Degree in fortepiano with Mr Bart van Oort at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. As an aside to this he graduated in Musicology and History of Music at Tor Vergata University in Rome (2005) and currently writes articles for Bollettino della Socieà Italiana di Musicologia, for Fonti Musicali Italiane and Rivista Italiana di Musicologia (Italy). Alongside engagements for international musicological seminars and lectures, since 2010 he is researcher for the Bern Hochschule der Künste. He is currently researching performance practice related to the instrumental repertory of the 18th and 19th century, in collaboration with the Italian Society of Musicology.



Clara graduated from The Royal Conservatiore (Koninklijk Conservatorium) as Master of Violin in 2009 under Vera Beths and Philippe Graffin. She performs regularly with collaborations such as The Hague String Variations (NL) and Amici Chamber Players (USA). She has most recently premiered new works at the Heidelberg Fruhling Festival as part of the Enesco Octet, and worked with the Rotterdam Kamerorkest; while also serving as concertmaster of the Royal Conservatory Orchestra during her Master studies. Clara has extensive teaching experience both in the USA and abroad and is a warmly welcomed addition to the Virtuosi string faculty. Yabo Qian - Business Manager

Yabo Qian (MSc.) holds a Bachelors degree in Business and Marketing, and   Masters Degree in Urban Development and Management. Since September 2010, Yabo is responsible for the day to day operation of the school, while working to link us closely to partner schools and expatriate organisations. Yabo was carefully chosen for her unique background combining education and business management. Having studied in The Hague, she is familar with the expat community, and has seven years experience teaching Chinese both in business and elementary schools.  Virtuosi is very happy to welcome her as an essential part of the team. A dedicated professional, she is friendly, well organised, and works in a highly systematic and organised manner - precisely what every music school needs!

Born in London in 1982, Victoria Nair Price studied Music and Pedagogy at Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), and at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar (Germany) where she graduated winning the Recorder Prize. She came to The Hague as a student of Reine-Marie Verhagen at The Royal Conservatory in 2005, and currently lives in Voorburg with her husband and son Sam. She is passionate about working with children and enjoys presenting music in a creative and spontantous way which makes learning fun. She teaches the Recorder, Early Years and Musicianship, English through Music for ‘Earlybird’ and conducts music workshops with all age groups. In addition to teaching, she performs as soloist with the Baroque ensembles Musica Dolce and Nova Hollandia.

Victoria Nair-Price - Recorder & Early Childhood

Singer/songwriter and new mother Fantine Tho combined her musical education and stage experience to participate in the reality show Popstars Brazil 2002 - and was selected from 30 thousand candidates to be a member of the pop group Rouge, with whom she has performed in front of more than 100,000 people, dancing, playing guitar and singing. Releasing 5 albums and 3 DVD’s, including some of her own original songs, Rouge sold over 6 million albums, allowing Fantine the opportunity to acquire media experience in the mediums of television, radio and film - which she now passes to other young performers. Fantine is an enthusiastic teacher, whether coaching stage presence to budding popstars or dance and music for Toddlers in our Early Years classes: “I believe music and dancing are precious for a little person's development”. She now lives in Holland with her Husband and 3 year old, also working as a personal fitness instructor aside her music career. Santiago Lascurain - Guitar

Born in Mexico City in 1980, Santiago completed a his Bachelor studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music taught under David Tanenbaum, before coming to the Maastricht Conservatory and now Royal Conservatory in the Hague to complete his Master studies. He has previously taught at the Amadeus Academy, CIDEG (Centre for Research and Development) and CIEM (Centre for Research and Musical Studies). Prizes and awards include the Conaculta International Studies Scholarship, Taxco Guitar Competition (Special Award), Conaculta Young Performer’s Scholarship and Paracho Guitar Competition (3rd Place). He has given Solo recitals in San Francisco, USA; Mexico City, Taxco, Xalapa, Mexico; Maastricht, Rotterdam) and Den Haag. From 2003-2005 he was the Guitarist for ‘Les Miserable’ and now performs regularly with the Mexican Folk group Serenata Mexicana. www.serenata.nl


Trevor Howe studied classical guitar with Bernhard Bielowski and John Della-Torre, then subsequently lute, archlute and theorbo with Tim Kersten in South Australia before he came to The Royal Conservatiore in The Hague as a lute student of Nigel North and Mike Fentross in 2005. He is founder and Director of the early music ensemble Nova Hollandia, and director of Virtuosi. He has also worked as a chef, and practices Tai Chi. He is qualified to teach Philosophy, Politics and Music to SACE level, and has worked as a supply teacher for the BSN Senior School in Voorschoten while undertaking his studies. He currently works to coordinate the educational needs of ex-pats living in The Hague with the international specialists based at the Royal Conservatiore. Virtuosi School of Music is Trevor’s vision and passion, providing both excellence in music education as well as helpful information, support and services for pupils, parents and colleagues alike.

Erin began her studies at the University of Western Australia under Paul Wright (Honours First Class). During this time she was finalist in the Vose Memorial Prize, awarded the Jean Rogerson Studentship, and winner of both the Fremantle Open Concerto Competition and Waveney Wansborough Prize. Upon graduation she was awarded the Lady Callaway Medal for themost outstanding final-year music student at UWA. Erin continues her studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, under the guidance of Ryo Terakado. Erin has performed, recorded and toured with various ensembles in Europe, Australia and Asia including Australian Classical Era Orchestra, Ensemble Arcangelo, Collegium Musicum, The Tall Poppeas, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Young Australian Concert Artists String Quartet, Opera Studio Nederland, Contrasto Armonico, Il Concerto Barocco, Ensemble Bastarda and most recently successful auditioned for The English Concert in London. She tours this year with The European Union Baroque Orchestra for their 2008 season, and joins Virtuosi in support of Meritxell and Louella when in Holland


Erin Chen - Violin


Emma Brown (1985) graduated from Cambridge in 2007 with an honours degree in Music, before moving to Holland to focus on her singing. She currently studies at Het Utrechts Conservatorium, and previously studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Emma studied piano from the age of six. She also took up singing in church choirs, and performed with various local amateur dramatic and choral groups. When she was eighteen, Emma was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. She studied at Cambridge while taking her music lessons at the academy. Her Cambridge Music Tripos focused on the theory and analysis aspects of music. She has performed the role of Countess in ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, new works composed by contemporary composers, as a soloist with many choirs, in Mozart’s ‘Requiem’, ‘Vespers’ and ‘Coronation Mass’, Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’, and Britten’s ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’. She has also sung Vaughan Williams ‘Serenade to Music’ with the Cambridge University Music Society, as well as giving her own solo recitals.  Emma is delighted to be continuing her studies in The Netherlands.

Kendra Borgen - Saxophone / Audio Engineering

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, (USA) Kendra began to play the saxophone at the age of ten inspired by the musical styling of Lisa Simpson. She is a graduate the University of Oregon, majoring in classical saxophone and jazz composition. While there she worked as an assistant to audio engineer Lance Miller, and soon realized she had a real passion and talent for audio engineering. Kendra has since completed courses at the renowned Aspen Music Festival and School in Recording Engineering in Aspen, Colorado. After her studies she left the States to attend the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, The Netherlands, earning her degree in Audio Engineering in 2007. Kendra is currently completing her Master's in Engineering, with supporting studies in jazz saxophone. She performs with the quartet Four'n'More as well as being founder and senior Audio/Video Engineer of Dar Productions.


Polish cellist and viola da gamba player Ania Katyńska formerly studied in Görlitz and Berlin (Universität der Künste) with Thomas Fritzsch, Mark Caudle, Phoebe Carrai and Markus Möllenbeck. She currently fellows baroque cello with Jaap ter Linden at The Royal Conservatiore (Master Programme) and viola da gamba with Mieneke van der Velden.

Ania has worked with Wolfgang Marschner, Alfredo Persichilli, William Carter, Bruno Cocset, Andrzej Bauer, Tomasz Strahl, and Andrzej Orkisz.
She has performed solo recitals at the Bach Festival in Katowice, Bach-Fest in Sumy and for Masterclasses in Eu (France). She recently appeared with the Britten-Pears Baroque Orchestra, for a performance of St Matthew Passion at the Aldeburgh Festival under Masaaki Suzuki on both cello and viola da gamba. Ania is co-founder of the early music ensemble Parnassos, with whom she records and attends international festivals with soloists Barthold Kuijken and Simon Standage. She has performed with the Academy Baroque Européenne d'Ambronay, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, European Union Baroque Orchestra, Arte dei Suonatori, New Dutch Academy, Le Parlement de Musique, International Baroque Players, Concerto Polacco, Accademia dell’ Arcadia and the Wroclaw Baroque Orchestra. Her other recording credits include Water Music by G.F.Händel with Lars Ulrik Mortensen and a DVD recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with Kati Debretzeni and Arte dei Suonatori. Ania is available for Cello, Gamba and Piano lessons at our Dintelstraat studios. Her teaching experience covers pupils from beginner to advanced on all three instruments.

Carlos Ema - Piano / Guitar / Music Therapy

Carlos Ema was Born in Pamplona, Spain. His main fields as a musician are Jazz, Flamenco, Improvisation and Folklore (piano, guitar, voice, charango, cuatro venezolano). He has a broad pedagogical background as a Piano, Guitar, Solfa, Aural Training and Voice teacher in Pachu Músicas and Toté Music Academy in Madrid (Spain) and Den Haag; co-author of different projects: Antawara, El Alto Villavictoria’s Indigenous School Support Project (La Paz, Bolivia), Pedagogical Concerts for children: Los Instrumentos Cuerda, La Guitarra Magica, Happy Horror Show, Luna and the Senses and Juguemos con la Musica; Music Teacher for the Maria Corredentora Special Education School working extensively with Downs Syndrome children. As a pianist he regularly performs ‘intermezzi’ for the Lucent Danstheatre (Den Haag) and various Jazz and Flamenco ensembles in Holland. He attained his Degree in Special Education from the Complutense University Pedagogy Faculty in Madrid (1999) and most recently his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano at the Royal Conservatiore in The Hague (2010).

Kirsten Cap - Piano

Kirsten began her musical journey at the age of four, at the Cork School of Music, Ireland. There she studied music theory, piano and cello. She has, since then, been a multiple prize winner in both national and international competitions. From 2002-2003 she was accepted for a period of study as a “young student” with Prof. Arbo Valdma, piano, and Prof. Maria Kliegel, cello, at the Hochschule für Musik, Köln. Since 2005 Kirsten has studied with Prof. Barry Snyder at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, and with Prof. Elena Lapizkaja at the Universität der Künste, Berlin. She currently studies with Prof. Naum Grubert at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Solo piano performances include those at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry, the Boyle Arts Week, the Triskel Arts centre, and the Crawford Art Gallery, among others. She has also performed with cellist Matthew Huber in London, with singer Jamie Munn in Berlin, and with The Vanbrugh String Quartet in Cork. Kirsten has taken part in masterclasses given by Tatiana Zelikman, Fanny Waterman, Jiri Hlinka, John Perry, Alicja Fiederkewicz, Philip Martin, Ewa Poblocka, Hugh Tinney, Barry Douglas, Pascal Roge and Marcel Baudet. She also performs as part of a piano-duo with her sister, Rebecca. They have given concerts in Cork, Waterford, Wexford, Rome, & Kö.

Born in Canada, Ms. Alatiit obtained her Bachelor of Music with high distinction at McGill University in 2002. She moved to New York to study at Stony Brook University where she completed her Masters in Music (2004).  She currently resides in The Hague, Netherlands where she studied in the Early Music Department at the Royal Conservatory. She has worked with many prestigious period-instrument ensembles such as, Sir John Elliot Gardner’s English Baroque Soloists, The English Concert, The Sixteen, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Opera Fuoco (Paris), New York Collegium as well as Concert Royal (New York).  As an active violin teacher, she received Suzuki training at Ithaca College and also holds her Teacher’s diploma from the Victoria Conservatory of Music.  She was on faculty for two years at the Suzuki Program in Mineola, NY and Queensborough where she taught both private and group violin lessons.  She has taught a range of ages from 3 years old to 60 years old, and is fluent in both English and French.

Dan Nicholas - Guitar

Guitarist Dan Nicholas grew up in New York City and Princeton, New Jersey. He is a lifelong music lover, and he played the guitar from a young age. Nicholas' most important musical influence is the world renowned jazz pianist and educator, Dr. Barry Harris, whom he met and began to study with in 1995, at the age of 18. During a six year period of intense learning with Harris, Nicholas also played around New York City and shared the stage with several New York jazz fixtures of the time including Jimmy Vass, George Braithe, Jimmy Lovelace and Frank Gant. After visiting Holland with the Barry Harris Workshop, Nicholas moved there in 2001, seeking a more stable atmosphere in which to develop all the influences he had gathered in New York. In his time in Holland, he received a masters degree with honors from the Royal Dutch Conservatory in the Hague, while firmly establishing himself in the Dutch jazz scene.


Nicholas has performed extensively throughout Holland with a formidable range of Dutch and International musicians including. Dan Nicholas' influences include Barry Harris, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Lester Young, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, and many, many others.

Tullia Melandri graduated in Piano at Rovigo’s Conservatoire in 1998 with the maximum mark. She studied chamber music at Siena’s Accademia Chigiana and at Imola’s Pianistic International Academy with Pier Narciso Masi. She obtained the Master degree in Piano at Livorno’s Conservatoire, where she studied with Daniel Rivera. Her thesis on the unknown composer Lamberto Caffarelli was selected for the publishing by the cultural association “Amici del Mascagni”. Distinguished in several musical competitions in Italy both as a chamber musician and soloist, she is active in chamber music in various formations, both at the modern piano as well at the fortepiano, in which instrument she is specializing with Bart van Oort at the Royal Conservatoire in Den Haag. She performed, inter alia, for Ravenna’s “Giovani in musica” festival and Utrecht’s “Oude Muziek” fringe festival, and in Bologna’s Villa Aldrovandi-Mazzacorati, Siena’s Palazzo Chigi Saracini, The Hague’s KorzoTheatre and Dr. Anton Philipszaal. In 2002 she graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage (Musical Specialisation) at the Bologna’s Athenaeum with a thesis on the choral books of the Dominican Convent of Forli’. She has a long teaching experience.
